One game sent kids on a scavenger hunt for letters and numbers. “Also it’s a free fun family event – and the storybook characters, they’re the big draw.”īecky LeBoeuf, the other organizer and a youth services librarian for the Delta Township District Library, said the event’s purpose was to “Instill a love reading and expand literacy skills. “We have crafts for fine motor skills, big motor skills activities in there, musical performers, storytelling, and it’s all focused around early literacy skills,” said Thais Rousseau, a CADL youth services specialist and one of the two event organizers.
The Literacy Celebration has been put on for nearly a decade by the Early Childhood Literacy Coalition, a tri-county organization including the Capital Area District Libraries, Great Start and Head Start programs, and WKAR. There were games, a kiddie obstacle course, fun programs, information tables for parents and music from various cultures – with children having an opportunity to try out various instruments.
Paddington, Little Critter, Curious George, Clifford and the Pout-Pout Fish were all at the Hannah Community Center, giving kids some delightful and educational fun during an otherwise dreary day outside.Īnd there was a lot more going on.
